History of Thanksgiving
- In September 1620, the Mayflower departed from Plymouth England, and set sail for the New World.
- After over two months, they landed in America and started to make a village.
- The first winter was very hard, and many died.
- In the spring the settlers made contact with the Native American tribe the Wampanoag, who helped teach the settlers how to survive.
- That November, after a big corn harvest, the Governor organized a feast between the settlers and the Native Americans.
- After this, Thanksgiving was celebrated every year, however it was not until the Civil War that it became a national holiday.
Why are we doing this?
- Santino (1994:14) says: “a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving is more than just another dinner.” No one should be alone on Thanksgiving, and many people cannot go visit family for the holidays.
- Jones (1988:238) says, “Significant aspects of artistry include not only the appearance, taste, and smell of the final product but also the way in which the raw ingredients are prepared, the attention to details of kitchen maintenance, and the rhythm of preparation as well as the nature and ambiance of the serving of the food”. The local restaurants are a prime example of this, taking local ingredients and turning them into a wonderful meal.
- Jones (1988: 236), “A type of food, the presence of food, or the preparation of food by someone may symbolize care, concern, and contentment.” We want to show people who may not have anyone to celebrate with that there are always people there for them.
